The first debate is over and relegated to the annals of digital memory. What we saw last night was a clear distinction between the two candidates. McCain continues to cling to the flawed belief that the war in Iraq was vital and necessary in th war against terror. Citing Bin Laden as he source, he referred to Bin Laden’s comment that Iraq was the central arena between his brand of people and Western Civilization. Senator McCain has somehow forgotten that the reason Iraq had become a central arena was because we had invaded it, giving an excuse for lunatics like Bin Laden to claim it as a war between Muslims and Crusaders. The Senator also has forgotten that by invading Iraq we strengthened Iran.

McCain’s biggest goal for last night was to show Obama as naive, inexperienced and potentially reckless. These were the same tactics used by Richard Nixon against Kennedy in 1960. It didn’t work then and it failed to work last night.

Obama showed that he could stand toe to toe with McCain on foreign policy. Not only did he come off as intelligent and sharp, but he clearly had a command of foreign policy and looked very presidential. McCain spent most of the debate trying to attack him and came across as aloof and arrogant.

Obama showed last night that he was against the reckless and oft times stupid approaches the Republican Party has exhibited over the last 8 years. McCain tried desperately to paint himself as a maverick but stuck to his party line and drew little differences between himself and the Bush Doctrine.

A new CNN poll out today shares this belief with 51% giving the debate to Obama while only 38% thought McCain came out the winner.

No wonder Senator McCain was so afraid of debating Senator Obama.

I am personally looking forward to next weeks major entertainment: The debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. That is if the Republican’s don’t invent an excuse for her not to show up.

Between the Katie Couric interview on CBS this week and next weeks debate…she might be the turning point that ends John McCain’s hopes for the White House.
